If you would like to know the answers to these questions (and more), keep reading. You are about to find out how to get the Spanish DNI for the first time as a foreigner with all the details you need to know to enjoy an easy process.
What is a DNI in Spain?
In Spain, DNI stands for “Documento Nacional de Identidad,” which translates to National Identity Document in English. It is an identification card issued to Spanish citizens and legal residents and serves as the primary means of identification within Spain.
The DNI includes personal information such as full name, date of birth, nationality, photograph, and a unique identification number. It is used for various purposes, including accessing healthcare, banking services, voting in elections, and proving identity in legal and administrative procedures.
How to get your Spanish DNI as a foreigner?
Once you have finally obtained your nationality by residence and you have completed the oath process, there is only one last step left: changing your NIE for your DNI.
The process is really straightforward, and can be summarized in simple steps:
- Gather required documentation: Collect all necessary documentation, which typically includes your newly obtained nationality certificate, passport, and any other identification documents specified by the authorities
- Request an appointment: Visit the National Police website or call 060 to schedule an appointment for submitting your documentation. You can choose any police station office regardless of your place of residence. You can make an appointment at any police station office through this link
- Submit documentation: On the scheduled appointment day, go to the selected police station office and submit your documentation. Biometric data such as fingerprints and a digital photograph will be taken during this visit
- Receive DNI: After completing the submission, you will receive your DNI the same day. There is no need to wait for its issuance or return later to pick it up
- Request Concordance Certificate: Once you have your new DNI, request a concordance certificate (certificado de concordancia). This certificate is used to notify all institutions where you previously used your NIE that you now have a DNI
- Update information: Use the concordance certificate to update your identification information with relevant institutions, such as banks, utilities, and public offices, to ensure your records reflect your new DNI number
Following these steps ensures a smooth transition from NIE to DNI and ensures your legal identification is updated across all relevant institutions in Spain.
What are the documents required to obtain the Spanish DNI?
The list of documents to get this basic identity document in Spain is really short and easy to obtain.
So, what should I bring on the day of the appointment to get the DNI?
- First of all, the city hall registration (“empadronamiento”), which must be issued no more than three months prior to the application for the DNI
- Literal birth certificate issued by the Civil Registry, which must specify that it is issued for the purpose of obtaining the DNI. Only literal birth certificates with a maximum of 6 months of antiquity will be accepted.
- Color photograph (passport type), 32x26mm size, with white background. Please note that you cannot be wearing dark glasses or any other garment that hinders your identification.
- In the case of being the first registration as a Spanish national citizen, the foreigner must also provide her TIE (physical residence card) or Certificate of Registration of the European Union in which her NIE appears.
Spanish citizens living abroad
Please note that the DNI and birth certificate can be requested (and obtained) from your country of origin at the Spanish consulate.
In this case, the certification of the Diplomatic or Consular Representation where the applicant is registered as a resident will act as a method of residency accreditation.
Once these Spanish nationals move to Spain (and after having obtained their DNI abroad) they must renew it in Spanish territory as soon as possible in order to have it updated properly.
How much does the Spanish DNI cost today?
Currently, the fee to apply for and obtain the DNI in Spain is €12.
Unlike the rest of the prior immigration procedures, you will not have to pay this fee in advance and carry the confirmation with you.
On the contrary, you must pay it (in cash) on the day of your appointment at the national police station.
However, it is also possible to pay online. Through the same website where you will make your appointment, once you have completed your application, you will see a link at the bottom of the page with the text “utilice este enlace para realizar el pago”. Click there and you will be automatically redirected to the online payment process.
Here you will find more information on how to make the online payment.
On the other hand, you must take into account that if you wish to renew your DNI because you need to change your address and/or affiliation, you will NOT have to pay the 12€ and the process will be completely free.
What is the duration or validity of the document?
Once you apply for and obtain your DNI as a Spaniard, you must take into account the renewal deadlines (according to an expiration date that you will find written on the card itself).
Thus, the duration or validity of this identity document (of the card) depends on your age at the time of application/obtaining it:
- It is valid for two years if the applicant is less than 2 years old
- 5 years if the applicant is between 5 and 30 years old
- 10 years when the holder is over 30 years of age
- Permanent when the applicant reaches 70 years of age
